The history of the Riad
Riad Al Bartal was built in the early twentieth century by a family of weavers. Originally the Riad covered an area much larger because there was a large garden that the owners have sold. Located in Ziat former residential district of Fez, Riad Al Bartal rubs the finest palaces in the medina. Unfortunately not all are open to the public because of their poor condition.
Al Bartal in Arabic means "bird". The former French owners of the Riad (Mireille and Christian) called it so because when they bought the Riad, it was abandoned for many years and the birds had taken refuge. Since then the birds continue to attend the patio, especially in the morning.
Your stay will be marked by the singing of birds. The mascot of the Riad is a gray parrot from Gabon, affectionately known as "Poulette". It may come visit you at your table because it is very gluttonous and is particularly fond of fruits and sweets.
The atmosphere of the Riad
In this splendid Riad of 800 m2 you will be subduedthe contrast between the dark streets of the medina walls lined with the sober and brightness of the patio is breathtaking.
Upon entry, after the chicane, which preserves the privacy of guests from the outside look, you will dive in an exceptional setting: blue zelliges, white marble, lace stucco, cedar wood, ceilings covered with lacquered wood red and gold ... The decorative exuberance, charm and serenity of the interior spaces will be an initial immersion in the Fassie culture.
This contrast is especially marked since the patio has become a real garden over time.
At dusk the light plays with the shadows and reveals the subtlety of stucco. Every day new details make you rediscover this decor of lace.
In the living room, nextto the fireplace, a library is at your disposal, you'll find books on the history of Fez and several guides that will be useful for your wanderings through the streets of the medina.
The terrace offers a panoramic view over the medina and the surroundings of Fez.
To preserve the tranquillity of residents, we have chosen not to install a television. We want to focus on human contact, discussions, and experiences sharing
The comfort of the Riad
All rooms of the Riad are conditioned in summer and heated in winter. In most there is also a stove or fireplace.
5 spacious suites (40 m2 and over) with private bathroom and toilet, 1 double bed for 2 persons or 2 single beds.
3 rooms on the mezzanine or duplex with private bathroom and toilet, 1 double bed for 2 persons or 2 single beds.
A gallery on the ground floor and first floor overlooking the courtyard provides access to each of the eight suites and rooms of the Riad. Spacious, each has a different decoration that harmoniously links tradition and comfort, Moroccan handicrafts, furniture and decoration of European travellers. (see our photos gallery)
The flowered terrace is an oasis of peace, the view over the medina and its surroundings is striking. You Can enjoy your breakfast and dinner there.
