The medina of Fez

The newborn Fez was marked by two historic events. The insurgency in the suburb of Cordoba in 818 forced thousands of Arab families to leave the Andalusian Spain. Six years later, thousands of Arab and Jewish families had to flee the Tunisian city of Kairouan. Kairouan and Andalusia were then two of the most important cultural centers of the world. The refugees brought with them their culture, their crafts and their refinement.

Mysterious city, Fez fascinates. Throughout its twelve centuries of history, Fez has kept intact the wealth bequeathed by the dynasties that succeeded each other, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities of Islam. Town of memories, imperial city, heir to the Andalusian culture, Fez is a mecca of culture and spirituality. She has always played an important role in the intellectual life of the country and has long been considered the "city of faith and knowledge" as "the Athens of Africa". The craft remains the economic engine of the city. All those small businesses exhausting and unprofitable let imagine the atmosphere of a town in the Middle Ages.

Fez architecture certainly has the richest and most remarkable of Morocco’s, but Fez is discrete, secret, and to know it one must bother going to it’s discovery. One must lose himself in it’s zigzag alleys and blank long walls to discover the authenticity of this town virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. The city that was called "the Jerusalem of the West by the diversity of its communities and its beliefs" has retained a power of attraction amply justified.

Fourteen miles of sand and ocher walls, run around the old town nestled in a valley between the Rif and Middle Atlas.
